10 TIPS TO BE A BETTER CYCLING AMBASSADOR
-
Know and obey the road rules. This one is really simple.
- Be polite – no verbal and physical aggression. It’s not cool.
- Be predictable – communicate your intentions whenever possible.
- Be prepared to slow down when passing pedestrians on shared paths – at busy times, slowing your speed to below 30kph is essential.
- Acknowledge other riders when passing and help create positive relationships between cyclists.
- Overtaking motor vehicles on the left is often risky – do it sensibly, slowly and patiently, and never pass a vehicle on the left which is already indicating a left turn.
- If in a bunch ride on a narrow road – consider splitting the bunch to groups of 20 riders or going single file when appropriate.
- Be well lit at night, but not with blinding headlights on bikepaths. People appreciate their eyesight.
- Warn cyclists and pedestrians when overtaking – overtake on the right hand side.
Remember: cars have blindspots and are much larger than you!
